THE CURATORS
ROLF KILLIUS
Rolf Killius is the curator, researcher and media producer of 'Gujarati Yatra - Journey of a people' project. He is (museums, exhibitions, and media), exhibition curator, ethnomusicologist (MMus SOAS, London University), oral historian, sound/film producer/editor and radio journalist whose work appears in a variety of contexts. He works internationally in exhibition curating, academic research, music and sound production, film production and editing, digital library research, digitisation and documentation.
Recently Rolf worked as Specialist Consultant in Oral History Management for the National Museum of Qatar and as Curator of Oral and Musical Cultures at the British Library Qatar Foundation Partnership in London and Doha.
LATA DESAI
Lata Desai is the co-curator and project leader of ‘Gujarati Yatra – Journey of a people' project. Inspired by the personal story of her family’s journey from India to Africa and Britain, she has been in constant pursuit of this knowledge and has been able to bring an extensive understanding of the story of this yatra as a co curator, researcher and project manager.
As the Chair of Subrang Arts, she has been able to profile and programme new and exciting culturally diverse arts, by creating and developing Subrang Arts, a leading South Asian Arts organisation in South London.
Lata has built an excellent track record and accrued considerable experience and knowledge in the management and delivery of Arts and Heritage projects working in partnership with the public and voluntary sector targeting a wide range of high quality of heritage projects – ‘Indian String and Dance Exhibition’, ‘Sitar Festival’, ‘Vivekananda and Ancient Indian Civilisation’ to name a few.
She has successfully managed dance and music projects, events, festivals, community-art workshops and commissions with regional, national and international artists. The immense range of art forms and cultures she has championed have an intrinsic value and are a benefit to the community as a whole. It is this career span as a practitioner that has given her a range of experience which she brings to bear in her role as a passionate Community Arts Leader.
THE PARTNERS
Subrang Arts is a leading South Asian Arts Organisation in South London dedicated to the promotion and development of Asian Art and Culture.
‘Subrang’ means 'spectrum of colours' and it represents the rich cultural heritage of the
Indian sub-continent.
Its main objective is to engage people of all age groups in all kinds of stimulating activities, give them
a supportive environment in which transformative experiences and exciting intercultural exchanges take place.
Through their links with heritage agencies, arts
organisations, venues, museums and other creative community groups, they have undertaken some of the most exciting events seen in South London over the last couple of years.
Though the two curators curate the exhibition, members of Subrang Arts facilitate most activities around this exhibition and event series with the support of Museum of Croydon.
